Scientists have advanced a brain-scanning technology that tracks what the brain is doing by shining dozens of tiny LED lights on the head. The technique compares favorably to other approaches but avoids the radiation exposure and bulky magnets the others require, according to new research at the School of Medicine.

It’s been a good run, but eventually the house lights come up. Since 1973, the Edison Ovations Series has brought nationally and internationally known performing artists to WUSTL and the community. But the 2014-15 season will be the Ovations’ last.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton presented Helen Kathleen Cook, PhD, of the Department of Anthropology, with the Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award at the annual Staff Day recognition ceremony May 19. The day also featured a barbecue lunch and time for backyard games, bike rides or bingo.

Adding vitamin D to asthma treatment to improve breathing only appears to benefit patients who achieve sufficient levels of the supplement in the blood. Overall, the ability to control asthma did not differ between a study group that received vitamin D supplements and a group that received a placebo. Mario Castro, MD, led the study.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized WUSTL for reducing its waste. Among other efforts, used cooking oil is recycled into biodiesel to fuel Bon Appétit campus delivery trucks. Here, executive chef Patrick McElroy (far right) explains the process.

The current U-Pass — allowing WUSTL faculty and staff free use of Metro, the region’s public transportation system — expires June 30. Benefits-eligible employees now may request a new U-Pass for the 2014-15 fiscal year through the Parking & Transportation Services website.
WUSTL faculty and staff should be aware of a new policy involving minors visiting WUSTL’s campuses. Leaders of on-campus programs that include people younger than 18 must register, complete training and, in some cases, ensure their staffs undergo background checks. For more details, visit here.
Parkview Place will close for up to two years starting July 7 due to construction of the new north campus tower on the old Jewish Hospital site on the Medical Campus. Patients receiving care in the Center for Advanced Medicine won’t be able to use Parkview to access the CAM and the North Garage.
